Our Story: The Power of One Word

In our 33 years together, Garland and I have always strived to grow—not just as partners, but as individuals with dreams and goals. As business owners, we’ve always set goals with purpose, yet often found ourselves struggling to achieve them despite our best efforts. Then in 2017, something changed. Attending a growth summit, we were introduced to the idea of choosing a single, guiding word for the year. This wasn’t just a word—it was a way to anchor ourselves to our vision, a daily reminder of what mattered most.
My first word, “Bold,” came to me in a time of transition. With our kids moving on and my career shifting, I felt a deep need for both growth and courage. Embracing “Bold” became my way of stepping into the unknown with confidence. Since then, I’ve chosen words that reflect my journey each year: “Intention,” “Purpose,” “Exploration,” “Brave,” “Journey,” and, this year, “Abundance.” Each word has marked a chapter of growth and discovery, shaping who I am and guiding my choices.
The most impactful word by far was “Brave.” That year, Garland and I made a life-altering decision to sell our family home—the place where we raised our kids—and the studio we built for our business. It took every bit of courage I had, yet looking back, I know it was the right decision. “Brave” helped me push past fear and take a leap that changed our lives.
This year, my word is “Abundance.” At first, I questioned what it truly meant to me. But as the months have passed, clarity has emerged, and I’ve realized the abundance I seek goes beyond material things; it’s about living fully, appreciating the present, and fostering a sense of purpose and gratitude.
Inspired by how powerful these words have been in our lives, Garland and I began creating “Word of the Year” products for our family. This simple practice of choosing and living by a single word proved transformative for each of us. That’s when we realized how much others could benefit from this, too.
