Discover Your One Word

Choosing your one word may be more challenging than you expect. When you only get one word, you have to be very intentional.

I’ll be honest—my first word in 2017, "Bold," came to me somewhat by chance. I had attended a growth conference as a guest, and they were handing out journals for gratitude practices. The word Bold was on the cover, which felt like both a sign and an inspiration. At that time, I was going through significant changes; our kids were off to college, and I was starting a career in real estate, feeling out of my element. I needed more boldness in my life. Using that journal each day kept my word at the top of my mind. I believe that’s why it worked so well for me.

The next year, in 2018, I chose Intention. Having experienced the power of a single word, I knew I wanted to live more intentionally. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Our life is the sum total of the choices we make every day, and those choices are ultimately our responsibility." In 2019, I chose Purpose, as I sensed my life entering a new season and felt drawn to a word that would guide me with clarity.

Every season of life, whether a year or just a few months, can benefit from a guiding word. If you're ready to discover yours, here are a few questions to help you find direction:

• What do I need in my life right now?
• What is missing, or what qualities do I value most?
• Is there a recurring theme in my goals for the future?

This process is meant to feel natural and reflective, not stressful. Simply relax, listen to your heart, and allow your word to come to you.

Start by making a list of words that resonate with where you want to grow. Focus on areas in your life where you feel you need guidance or want to cultivate growth. Consider discussing your list with family and friends who know you best. Accountability and support can be essential in this journey. My family has always been a part of this process with me.
